The Making of Brown Sound 78/79

Jim Gaustad: "I tried to keep this as analog as completely possible."

The Brown Sound 78/79 Signature Collection for TONEX was made in collaboration with Jim Gaustad, whose dedication to honoring the sonic legacy of his guitar hero has led him deep into vintage circuits, studio techniques, and signal chains.

What gear and techniques did Jim use to create Brown Sound 78/79? Everyone agrees that the results sound amazing. In this video, he shares his experience and the challenges of capturing the 50 Tone Models, explaining in detail how to make the most of the collection. Take a look.

You've got to use your ears. I made well over a thousand recordings, moving the microphone, tweaking this and that, and listening, listening back, and listening again, and then fine-tuning.

Don't be afraid to pull the gain back a little bit if you want to match the album tones of Van Halen and Van Halen II, and your guitar has a hotter pickup.
